Chapter Fourteen

A hard rap on her door made Kya jump. She closed the file on her tablet and quickly removed the SD card she had saved the files on. She tucked it into her pocket and moved to the door.

Kya looked out the peephole and frowned at the stranger darkening her door.

“Open up, Kya.”

She opened the door and glared as two men strode in. She looked past them to the day guard. “What the hell?”

“They have a warrant to search your place.”

“For what?” she demanded.

“For a knife.” The cool reply came from a man who followed the small team into her apartment.

“Try the kitchen,” she said snappish. “That’s where I keep my cutlery.”

“Watch yourself,” he said coldly. “This is a murder investigation. I’ll drag your ass off to jail.”

“Not unless I woke up in ’forty Germany,” she retorted, crossing her arms across her chest.

He sneered at her. “We’ve already taken three people in, so think about saving your own ass. Where were you last night between nine and one?”

“Here at first, and then with someone else.”

“Who?” he demanded.

“Blade. We were together all night after she got in.”

His gaze hardened on her. “You’re willing to lie for a woman who killed an agent? She’s going to get the needle, and you’ll get time or accessory after the fact and impeding an investigation.”

“Just because you don’t like my answers doesn’t mean they’re wrong,” she said evenly.

“There’s no Bowie knife here.”

They were looking for the knife she’d cleaned and stowed between towels in the bathroom?

“Where’d you hide it?” he asked.

“I didn’t, genius,” she muttered. “Ask the agent who was here earlier. I left Blade’s before they even started talking. I’ve been here since.”

“I want the surveillance tapes.” He turned to the guard who leaned against the door frame looking bored.

“My wish is your command,” she said blandly. “Later, Kya.” She turned and pulled open the door.

“Don’t plan any trips out of town,” he said before they all exited.

The complex was crawling with cops and FBI for three hours. It was two more hours before a knock on her door had her nervously rushing to it, but her cat quickly calmed her, picking up familiar energy patterns.

She looked out of the peep hole before pulling the door open to Blade. “What happened?”

“They couldn’t hold us, though not for lack of trying.”

“They were looking for your knife,” she said.

Blade put a finger to her lips and started to move, but Kya caught her hand.

“Cattail’s been here already, sweeping for bugs and stuff,” she said and laced her fingers through Blade’s. “I was worried.”

Blade looked at her. “There was no need. The lawyers are excellent, as you well know.”

“Blade,” she muttered. “When a woman—when I say I’m concerned, it means just that. You don’t brush it off or see it as a trap because I’m not trying to trap you.”

Blade’s gaze was wary, and she pulled away. “You did take my clothes to the incinerator?”

“Along with the knife’s sheath. I figured you had another one.”

“I do,” she said.
